A medical mobile app to capture, analyze, and share respiratory sounds.

Context

Pneumoscope is an intelligent digital stethoscope developed with Onescope, a HUG spin-off. It records respiratory sounds and other vital signs, then helps clinicians interpret them.

Appik Studio develops the application that connects the device to clinicians, patients and the hospital's information system.

From prototype to hospital

• 2022–2023: first prototype of the app and the sound analysis, with the research teams.
• Since September 2024: production application, developed continuously by Gaspard, William, Livio and Mathilde.
• 2025–2026: gateway to the HUG patient record, on-phone classification of recordings and security reviews.

What the application does

• Connects to the stethoscope over Bluetooth and monitors the device status.
• Guides auscultation point by point, following the positions defined with clinicians.
• Records respiratory sounds, temperature and oxygen saturation, with live readings during the measurement.
• Keeps patient records and measurement history, on phones and tablets.
• Records a clinical respiratory score and classifies recordings with AI models that run on the phone.
• Exports measurements and recordings for research teams, with a laboratory mode for device testing.

Connecting the app to the patient record

To avoid duplicate data entry, Appik built a gateway that identifies the patient in the HUG system and sends the auscultation results there, in the HL7 format the hospital uses. A configuration and test interface lets IT teams check every exchange.

The gateway was developed and tested with HUG systems, following the IT requirements the hospital sets for applications that connect to them.

Security and quality

• The server checks that each user can access only the patients and measurements that concern them.
• Sensitive changes are logged, and account deletion is supported.
• Two AI-assisted security reviews of the entire codebase strengthened access control in 2026.
• Automated test journeys check the application's main screens.

Results

• The application is used in HUG clinical pilots.
• One product covers bedside measurement, patient follow-up, research and the link with the hospital record.
